Lady Cats one victory from state title
By Richard Greene
The Pilot Point Lady Cats are 27 outs away from securing their first state championship.
But those 27 outs will not be easy, especially the final three against the gritty squad from Santa Gertrudis Academy in Kingsville.
The two Class 2A finalists will meet at 6 p.m. at Red and Charlie McCombs Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin Thursday for the state title.
Santa Gertrudis (39-4) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh Wednesday to rally for a 7-6 victory over Hawley in the semifinal to reach the title game.
Danielle Gonzalez and Kimberly Ruiz drove in two runs each.
Pilot Point (39-2-1) took down Garrison 5-2 in their semifinal. The Lady Cats scored four runs in the third inning, including a two-run single by Lori Campbell.
“This is what you work for and why you do all the hard work and all the extra things that you do – to get here,” said Pilot Point coach James Ramsey. “I have to give my kids credit. They’ve done an outstanding job. I don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. But I know they are going to lay it on the line.”
