Ever bought eggs and wondered why there are different sizes inside the carton?
USDA categorizes eggs by weight not by size.
Each of the six classes must contain a minimum weight per carton, starting with Peewee at 15 ounces to Jumbo at 30 ounces.
The weights are printed on the carton's top.
When a carton is filled at the factory, eggs will be slightly different in size/ weight to equal the total weight.
When buying a dozen eggs, which is the best bargain?
Let's compare Large 24 oz, Extra Large 27 ounces and Jumbo 30 ounces.
At a local supermarket this week, large eggs cost $2.72. $2.72 ÷ 24 ounces = $0.1133.
Extra large eggs cost $2.97. $2.97 ÷ 27 ounces = $0.11.
Jumbos were $3.42. $3.42 ÷ 30 ounces = $0.114.
Best bargain is Extra Large at $0.11 per ounce.
To double check, the difference in price between large and extra large is $0.25 but a $.70 difference between large and jumbo.
Extra Large wins this week.
You probably can use the $.25/carton difference to compare between sizes. But if prices go down again, you may have to adjust that. My second set of advice is to be an allweather friend not just a fair-weather friend. Lifelong friendship is based on many qualities: honesty, trust, common interests.
Being a good listener when someone needs your ear will help build lasting friendships.
We never know what someone has been through in the past or the true depths of a current problem.
Being there for someone, just actively listening, can make all the difference to them when facing a problem.
You may need that friend's listening ear at some point and what you've shared can give you insight for a problem you're facing.
We're all better off when we have a friend in our corner.
