Bearcats to host Bulldogs at Massey

The 2-1 Pilot Point Bearcats look to rebound from their loss against Lindsay in a home game against the 1-2 Howe Bulldogs on Friday.

The Bulldogs enter Massey coming off of a 40-20 home loss against the Bowie Jackrabbits on Sept. 12.

“They run a spread offense, which we haven’t seen since the scrimmages, but they do a good job with it,” said Chad Worrell, Pilot Point athletic director and head football coach. “Their quarterback does a good job of throwing the ball around, and they’ve got some receivers that can make plays. They’ll also run the ball to keep you honest, and when they do, [Knox Bounds] is a big physical back that breaks tackles. … They’re a good football team.”

Pilot Point has been on a roll on both sides of the ball with over 1,000 yards of total offense and 14 touchdowns through three games and has held their opponents under 150 yards of total offense and 7 points or less in their two wins.

The Bearcats will look to keep rolling against a the Bulldog defense led by safety Eli Stoner and linebackers Garrett Rodgers and Charles Fuhr, who were all named as players to watch by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

On the opposing sideline, Howe’s offense, led by quarterback Deacon Bender, has struggled with consistency during its nondistrict schedule.

The Bulldogs scored 21 points in their win over Bonham but averaged 13 points in their two losses to Boyd and Bowie.

Despite their struggles this season, Worrell said, “Whichever team makes the fewest mistakes will probably win,” especially after Howe came from behind to beat the Bearcats 28-25 in last year’s matchup.

“It’s about putting four quarters together and when you have someone down, not letting them back in the game, and we’ve done a good job of that this year in our first couple of games,” he said. “Last year, we were still searching for that first win when we played them, and once we got up, we lost a little focus and let them back in with some turnovers and miscues, but this game will show how far we’ve come and give us a chance to go out and play four quarters against the team that’s pretty evenly matched with us.”

Pilot Point and Howe are set to kick off at 7 p.m. Friday at Massey Stadium.
