Being a good neighbor is invaluable

OPINION

Good neighbors are an invaluable resource.

On Monday evening, I got a concerned and concerning message from my staff members who were still at the office when I missed a call.

'We have a potential emergency at the office. Please call ASAP.'

That's enough to cause your heart to race. The issue? A portion of the metal siding around the top of the building was dislodged and was hanging down onto the light fixture on the side of the building and the—thankfully—insulated wires that connect the building to the powerline.

I'm so grateful for Cliff and Kathy Lunsford at the Square Center who spotted the problem while circling the area to make sure they had buttoned everything up and cared enough to let us know.

I'm grateful, too, for the people who care about my family and me who helped make it possible still for us to handle all of the commitments we had for the evening while I sat in my car and stared at the problem, watching for the possibility of arcing or other signs a fire could start.

The Pilot Point Fire Department, too, made it so I could walk away and get some sleep that night by ensuring the fire risk was prevented.

We aren't supposed to go through life

alone.

Being a newlywed, too, reminds me of just how sweet having a companion to shoulder life together can be. Our communities, as Cliff and I talked about Wednesday, are improved when we care about one another. If you feel like you don't have a support system to help pick you up when you're struggling, I would encourage you to go out somewhere that you enjoy so you can try to connect with others. That could be going to one of the state park programs. It could mean heading to the Pilot Point Coffee House, Lowbrows or the American Legion on a karaoke night to bond over music.

It could be going to the Pilot Point Community Center or a local library program.

If you see someone struggling, reach out. We all do better when we watch out for each other.
