The Aubrey Lady Chaparrals earned their first home win of the 2025 season, defeating the Denton Lady Broncos 44-29 on Tuesday night.
The two teams were evenly matched in the first half, but the Lady Chaps turned up the defensive intensity and pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Lady Broncos 25-9.
“It feels good because we hadn’t won one at home yet,” said Nicole Black, Aubrey head girls basketball coach. “We picked up some wins on the road in our tournament in Keene, so we’re starting to learn how to win, but we dropped our first two home games. It feels good to finally put that win on the board at home in front of a good crowd and in front of some of our middle school kids, and it was really nice to see them work through some things and come out on top with a significant win.”
Both teams started slow offensively in the opening period, with the score being tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The scoring pace picked up in the second quarter, with the Lady Broncos going on a 10-6 run and taking a 17-13 lead, but the Lady Chaps made it a onepoint game with back-toback three-pointers from junior point guard Aniyah Davis, sending the teams into the half with Denton up 20-19.
The Lady Chaps took control of the game in the second half, outscoring the Lady Broncos 12-7 in the third quarter and taking a 31-27 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Aubrey’s defense smothered Denton in the fourth quarter, holding them to a single-made shot attempt, while its offense continued to roll, outpacing the Lady Broncos 13-2 to take the 44--29 win.
Davis led the Lady Chaps’ offense with 15 points, followed by senior forward Abby Lynch-Buxton, who added 11 points and 5 rebounds.
“ After I made those shots [in the second quarter], it brought our intensity up on defense, and when we’re playing with intensity on defense, it feeds into our offense,” Davis said.
Lynch-Buxton, who helped set the tone for the Lady Chaps in the first half by crashing the boards and drawing multiple fouls, also spoke highly of the team’s defensive performance.
“Us being athletic helps, but honestly, trusting each other to rotate correctly and everybody doing their job really helps us play well together,” she said.
The win is the second in a row for the Lady Chaps and brings their record to 5-5 on the season, and Black said the victory should pay dividends as the team prepares for district play.
“District is right around the corner, and we know we need momentum going into it, so every win, especially when we can show the people in our community that we’ve made some improvements, they’re going to show up, and then we can feed off their energy, [which] just keeps making things better and better for us. I keep telling them, ‘Give them a reason to want to come watch you,’ and they’re doing it with their defense.”
