Filing period closes for May races

The last day for cities and school boards across Texas to receive applications for candidacy in the May 2 general election ballot was Feb. 13, and the final applicants are in.

The terms for Pilot Point ISD Place 1, held by President Renee Polk, and Place 2, held by Amy McEvoy, expire in May.

Polk will run unopposed. McEvoy also filed again but has drawn two challengers, Mark Harpool and Kirsten Peoples.

The board has also called a $295 million bond election, asking voters to decide whether to fund a new high school, new elementary school and additional renovations across the district on the May 2 ballot.

The Pilot Point City Council has canceled its May election because both incumbent members, Brian Heitzman for Place 1 and Ray Dane for Place 3, reapplied and ran unopposed.

For Aubrey ISD, Secretary Jody Gonzalez, who has served on the school board since 2015, is running unopposed for Place 6.

Colleen Dow, who has served on the board since 2011, did not reapply for her spot, and four applicants, Fred Mathews, Timothy Frarer, Dustin Clay and Emily Doramus, are running to fill her Place 7 seat.

Aubrey City Council Place 1 and Place 4 were up for election.

Incumbents Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Perry will keep Seat 1, and Randy Jones will maintain Seat 4, as neither drew a challenger.

In the town of Providence Village, Mayor Linda Inman and Mayor Pro Tem Kelly Nelson, Place 1, both ran unopposed, securing their spots.

Elise Jumbelick applied for Place 6 and ran uncontested as the current seat holder. Adam Knesek, did not file for the spot.

Town residents will still have the opportunity to vote on eight proposed amendments to the town charter on the May 2 ballot.

In Krugerville, City Council members Marion Ragsdale, Place 2, and Stacey Sasser, Place 4, both filed and ran uncontested, as did the newly appointed mayor, Rodney Cagle, for the mayoral seat.

For the town of Cross Roads, Mayor T. Lynn Tompkins Jr. as well as Town Council members David Meek and Kevin Nowak, all incumbents, ran uncontested.

In the city of Tioga, current incumbents Mayor Pro Tem Kurt Hall, Place 1, and council member Thomas Hunter, Place 3, filed but drew no opponents, but incumbent Heather Nesmith, Place 5, will face challenger Patty Wheeler on the May 2 ballot.

Tioga ISD had three seats up for reelection: Seat 3, held by Ryan Walters; Seat 5, held by Holly Mizer; and Seat 7, held by Trina Colteryahn.

All three of the TISD trustees filed and ran unopposed, which means that election will be canceled.

In the Collinsville City Council race, there will be no election, as three of the four incumbents—Jessica Orsburn, Carl Lucas and Austin Lewter—applied and ran unopposed.

A new council member, Chris Black, replaces Brandon White, who did not file.

For Collinsville ISD, three spots were up for election, including Place 1, currently held by Matt Weaver; Place 2, currently held by Ryan Patterson; and Place 3, currently held by Jared Light.

Weaver drew a challenger, Derek Kays, with Patterson and Light retaining their seats.
