It was textbook swings all around for the Aubrey Chaparrals and Lady Chaps golf teams, with both teams competing at their respective district tournaments.
The Lady Chaps were represented by two competitors, Yuri Judge and Maggy Farmer, at the District 9-4A Girls Tournament hosted at Lake Park Golf Course in Lewisville on March 24-25.
Judge, a sophomore playing her second year of varsity golf, was the top performer for the Lady Chaps, finishing with a two-day total of 162, placing fifth overall and earning a spot at the regional tournament.
“I definitely used last year as an example on how to better myself, so this year I was definitely more relaxed and played the game the way I know how and treated it more as a way to have fun instead of a big competition where everything is on the line,” she said.
Judge said she was overjoyed when she received the news she would be moving on to the next round of competition.
“I’m a very expressive person, so when I found out I had qualified, inside I was going crazy,” she said. “… I don’t know what to expect at regionals, but I’m hoping that I can present myself well and play this game the best way I can and see how far I can really go.”
On the boys’ side, the Chaparrals had four competitors, Luke Oringderff, Jackson Polen, Cole Travascio and Ayden Bass, with Oringderff finishing as the Chaps’ top performer.
Oringderff finished with a two-day total of 168, tying for eighth overall and also tying for the second district medalist but was defeated in a sudden death playoff that decided the second individual regional qualifier.
Polen had a two-day total of 170, placing 10th overall.
Travascio had a score of 179, finishing 22nd overall.
Judge, Oringderff and Polen also received all-district honors after their Top 10 performances at the district tournament.
Aubrey head golf coach Tyler Walterscheid said he’s excited at the opportunity for Judge.
“I want her to get there, accept the challenge and play her best,” he said. “… I always tell the kids, ‘You give it all you’ve got, and at the end of the day we’ll see where we’re at,’ so I just want her to battle and leave it all on the course.”
Judge is scheduled to return to the course for the 4A Region II Girls Regional Golf Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday at the Sulphur Springs Country Club.
