Aubrey opens bond-funded indoor facility
Aubrey Independent School District’s brand indoor multipurpose athletic facility is nearing completion, with the finishing touches expected in July.
After months of construction, the multimillion- dollar facility is already in use by the Chaparrals' athletic programs.
“We’re extremely blessed to have a facility of this magnitude,” said Keith Ivy, Aubrey ISD athletic director and head football coach. “We’re just proud of our community coming together to see this through and make it happen for us.”
Ivy added that the enthusiasm for the facility extends beyond the athletic program.
“But the most excitement is for all of our students—not just athletes—but all of our extracurricular programs are going to be using this place.” The athletic facility was proposed as a major part of Proposition B of the $385.9 million 2022 bond, and construction began in October 2025.
The 122,000-squarefoot facility now stands attached to the north face of the Chaparrals’ previous athletic field house, with its most prominent features including a full-sized football field with a turf surface and a 5,000-squarefoot weight room.
The turf area of the facility is also arranged to facilitate multiple sports, with lines and goals for soccer and bases and batting cages for softball and baseball, including a mobile pitching mound for baseball.
The Chaps athletic programs began using portions of the facility last semester and have opened it up for use by the Chaparral Marching Band, the Chaparettes Dance Team and the surrounding community, including using it to host a football showcase event for Midwestern State University on Sunday.
“Everybody is using it, and we want everyone to get a piece of the pie; that’s the beauty of it,” Ivy said.
The facility also includes a larger weight room with new equipment and larger locker rooms to help the athletic program keep up with the growth of the district’s student population.
“We ran about 350 kids through the weight room this morning; there’s plenty of space,” Ivy said in February. “With eight racks, we will have two or three groups in the weight room working out at the same time, and we can divide them in different quadrants, and it works out great. We can have close to 150 kids in there at one time, and that was unheard of in our old weight room.”
The construction also includes renovations and upgrades to the Chaps' previous field house, with the old weight room being converted into two theaterstyle media rooms for meetings and classes, a new athletic training room and new offices for the athletic staff.
“It’s certainly a gamechanger,” Ivy said. “We've been excited for this for a while, so to watch it go from the very beginning of the bond process, through the builders to the construction of it all, has been amazing. We want it to have a big impact on these kids and their time with us here at Aubrey High School, and hopefully this can be a part of helping all of them reach their full potential.”
Aubrey ISD Superintendent Dr. Shannon Saylor echoed Ivy's sentiments on what the facility means for the Chaparrals’ future.
“It's going to be a great addition for the district, so we’re proud that our constituents passed it in 2022 with the bond,” Saylor said. “As we're growing, I'm super excited for our kids in Aubrey to be able to have this facility for their activities, whether it's for their dance, soccer, football— any sport or activity that they do—and for the community if anyone wants to host events in this facility.”
