Bearcats claim first at District

Track season is picking up the pace after the Pilot Point Bearcats and Lady Cats competed at the UIL 3A Region 2 District 10 Track Meet in Whitesboro on April 8 and 9.

The Bearcats took the district title, placing first overall out of seven teams with a team total of 170.75 points.

“They competed hard and ran their tails off for those two days,” said Tyler Lawson, Pilot Point head boys track coach. “We were behind Ponder by about 25 points going into the running finals, and we pulled away there, so it was a good day for us.”

The Bearcats got off to a hot start with Hunter Newman winning gold in the long jump with a leap of 20-feet-6 1/2-inches.

Kaleb Reid won silver in the pole vault with a Pilot Point ISD record height of 13-feet-6-inches, breaking the previous record of 13-feet set by Reid at the Panther Relays in March.

Luke Conner earned the bronze medal in the high jump with a height of 6-feet, followed by Caleb Johnson, who finished fourth with a height of 6-feet.

Daniel Medrano closed out the Bearcats' field event competitors, finishing fifth in the discus with a throw of 127-feet-7-inches.

Lawson highlighted the Bearcats’ performance in the sprint events for helping the team take the district championship.

“It was our open 400; we finished first, second and third in that event, and that was a big jump and allowed us to move into first, and we held on to the lead with our distance and our 4x400 times,” he said.

Newman, Michael Marsh and Johnson took the gold, silver and bronze medals in the 400-meter dash with times of 51.44, 52.19 and 52.46 seconds.

Conner earned the bronze medal in the 200-meter dash and finished fourth in the 100-meter dash, with times of 23.08 and 11.55 seconds.

Josh Chumley also competed in the 100-meter dash, finishing fifth with a time of 11.6 seconds.

Blake Warren was the Bearcat’s top performer in the long-distance running events, earning bronze in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:30.21 and finishing fourth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:40.55.

Angel Garcia won bronze in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:05.63.

In the hurdle events, Jack Harpool won gold in the 110-meter hurdles and silver in the 300-meter hurdles, with times of 15.99 seconds and 41.6 seconds.

The Bearcats’ relay teams secured silver in the 4x200and 4x400-meter relays, with times of 1:30.8 and 3:27.57.

The Bearcats’ 4x100 relay earned bronze with a time of 43.42 seconds.

The Lady Cats finished fifth overall out of seven teams, with a team total of 69 points.

Alliyah Smith led the team in field events, securing silver in the shot put with a throw of 30-feet-1 3/4-inches.

In the long-distance events, Ava Smith set the pace, winning gold in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:20.05, followed by Madison Coronado, who finished fifth with a time of 5:44.82.

Sophia Garcia earned the bronze medal in the 3200-meter run, with a time of 12:01.73, followed by Kaelyn Chaney, who finished fifth with a time of 12:23.18.

Smith and Chaney finished second and third in the 800-meter with times of 2:24.28 and 2:27.65.

Coronado also competed in the 800-meter, finishing fifth with a time of 2:35.35.

Peytyn Goodin was the Lady Cats’ top performer in sprint events, finishing fourth with a time of 1:02.83.

In the hurdle events, Austin Crow secured silver in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with times of 17.3 and 59.17 seconds.

In the relay events, the Lady Cats’ 4x400 finished fourth with a time of 4:18.96.

“The girls competed really well,” Pilot Point girls track coach Jeff Price said. “… We think all the kids that we have moving on have a chance at the area meet. They’re all sitting in a good spot or right there in the fourth spot, so hopefully the kids are able to perform well again.”

The Top 4 finishers in each event were scheduled to compete at the UIL 3A Region 2 Area 9 & 10 Track Meet on Thursday in Whitesboro.

The results were not available by press time.
