April Michelle Howard, a Pilot Point Elementary School fourth-grade teacher, was arrested by the Pilot Point Police Department on Sept. 3 on a charge of injury of a child with intent to cause bodily injury, according to the Denton County Jail records.
The charge, according to the Texas Penal Code, is classified as a third-degree felony.
'We are writing to inform you of an allegation made regarding April Howard, a Teacher at Pilot Point Elementary School,' read one of two letters sent to Pilot Point Elementary School parents regarding the incident. 'The District was notified on August 21, 2026, of allegations that Ms. Howard inappropriately disciplined a student.'
In that letter, sent out and signed by Principal Shana Pike on Aug. 21, it stated to the public that PPISD had contacted the Texas Education Agency State Board for Educator Certification, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the Pilot Point ISD Police Department and the Pilot Point Police Department regarding the situation.
In the letter issued following Howard's arrest, the district said 'Ms. Howard was placed on administrative leave pending investigation.'
'We will continue to follow District protocols to comply with legal requirements,' according to the second letter. 'We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and are committed to transparency as this case develops, within the limits of what the law allows us to share and while maintaining confidentiality for any victim, as outlined by law.'

According to the jail records, Howard was arrested and also released on Sept. 3 on a $5,000 bond.
