OPINION
At the Aubrey City Council meeting on Sept. 24, the subject of volunteering came up.
That's because right now there are several boards that need people to fill vacancies so the boards can function properly.
Don't be surprised if in the coming week or two you see an article spelling out the various vacancies throughout the area that are in need of someone to step up.
Volunteering is worth the effort.
I've said that time and time again, but it's true.
When we volunteer in our community, we get to help shape what it looks like.
When we take the chance to help, we fill a void that there might not be resources to fill otherwise.
One of my favorite ways to volunteer lately has been to take photos and videos at my children's activities.
Seeing the students respond to someone (or in the case of some of the activities, multiple people) caring enough to document their hard work and accomplishments makes the time worth it.
If you have goals of serving in grander ways, it's great to get in on the ground floor, such as with a city board or a school-based organization. It's much easier to know how to have an impact if you know how to navigate the organization you want to be a bigger part of instead of jumping in head-first to a council or board position.
Although we plan to put out a thorough explanation of the opportunities available throughout the Ranch Cities area, don't wait to reach out and offer your help.
You never know. Maybe the connections you make by volunteering in our area could change your life in positive ways.
The only way to find out is to put yourself out there and to serve.
