Council discussed firearms within Providence Village at the Tuesday council meeting.
The council approved an ordinance mirroring the city of Aubrey's ordinance to regulate the discharge of firearms and other projectile weapons within the town.
“It does not prevent individuals from protecting themselves or their property from an immediate threat,” Town Manager Brian Roberson said.
A resident recommended the ordinance after raising the concern at a previous council meeting.
The ordinance's main objectives are public safety, reducing noise disturbances and property damage and giving law enforcement more structure to better assist residents, staff said.
The ordinance also states that individuals who use a shotgun must obtain written permission from any neighboring properties where the projectiles would fall or travel.
It also says that pellet guns or BB guns are allowed on private property, only if there is enough backstop to prevent projectiles from going onto another property.
Council approved an amendment in the Code of Ordinances to allow staff to handle minor plat issues with subdivision regulations, instead of bringing it to council.
“If there was anything that needed any sort of new public improvement, such as extension of a public water line or a new road or something along those lines, those are always going to come in front of y'all,” Planning and Community Development Manager Becky Ross said.
Council approved a resolution accepting a request to annex about 6.361 acres.
The land is at “the triangular tract just north of the Cape Cod intersection on Main Street on the west side,” Roberson said.
The property is zoned ag; the new property owners plan to change the use from ag to a different zoning classification, which prompted the annexation process, Robinson said.
The council will schedule a public hearing for November.
The council approved an ordinance adding flood damage prevention regulations.
At the meeting, Roberson also shared updates with Republic Services.
“Since the change, we've seen a dramatic drop in the number of missed pickups,” Roberson said.
The council voted for candidate Mike Browning of the Aubrey City Council in the Texas Municipal League Region 8 Director election.
“To have that kind of representation, I think, would be very beneficial for us,” council member Klayton Rutherford said.
Mayor Linda Inman shared a similar sentiment.
“It's nice to finally have one of these things that we actually have a connection with the candidate, and I know Mike; he's a great guy, so I'm pretty confident in this as well,” she said.
