The Aubrey Chaparrals varsity football team went on the road and earned their fifth district win of the season and fifth win-in-a-row, knocking off the Lake Dallas Falcons 28-21 on Oct. 23.
The Chaps rolled into Falcon Stadium riding a four-game winning streak and pounced on the Falcons, taking an early lead and holding on to win despite a spirited comeback effort from the home team.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the effort and heart these young men played with; we just continue to find ways to win these big games against very good opponents,” said Keith Ivy, Aubrey athletic director and head football coach. “Our guys are just continuing to get better and better each and every week, and hopefully we can continue to improve these last two weeks and be playing at the highest level that we can possibly play at going into the playoffs.”
Aubrey struck the first blow of the night when quarterback Connor Murphy called his own number, crossing the goal line from 11 yards out, putting the Chaps on top 7-0 in the first quarter.
The Chaps added to their lead when Murphy connected with wideout Will Storey for a 38-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter.
That would be the score as the team went into the locker room for halftime.
Lake Dallas finally punched their way back into the match in the third quarter, with a goal line plunge by running back Reagan Reyes, cutting Aubrey’s lead to 14-7.
The Chaps responded with a rushing touchdown of their own, with Murphy carrying the ball into the end zone for the second time of the night, making the score 21-7.
Reyes got the Falcons on the scoreboard again, this time with a 70-yard touchdown catch that pulled Lake Dallas within one touchdown of tying the game.
Aubrey answered the Lake Dallas score with one of their own when Jaxson Doramus scored on a 4-yard rushing touchdown, making it a two-possession game as the contest entered the fourth quarter.
Falcons wideout Mycah Love scored the game’s final touchdown with a 32yard reception to make the score 28-21, but Aubrey held on to take the win 2821.
Murphy led the Chaps through the air and the ground, totaling 268 yards of offense and 3 touchdowns, while Storey operated as his top target with 3 receptions for 67 yards and 1 touchdown.
“Connor and Will have been tremendous leaders for us this season,” Ivy said. “They’re huge parts of our offense, but they’re also unselfish players. There are games where one or both of them may not have great stat lines, but they find other ways to continue helping their team and show up when their numbers are called.”
The win solidifies the Chaps’ position at the top of their district and moves Aubrey up to the No. 10 spot in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s 4A Division I rankings, but Ivy emphasized that the Chaps are still on the hunt for another district championship.
“We completely control our own destiny here going into these last two games, and we need to win one of the last two to be outright district champions, but our goal all season has been to go undefeated as district champions, and its right here in our grasp,” he said.
