The Aubrey Lady Chaps faced off with the Sanger Lady Indians on Tuesday night and took care of business en route to an 11-1 victory.
The Lady Chaps leaned on a strong night in the batter’s box, with two home runs, and on the mound to control the game, collecting their sixth in a row.
“It was a really good team win,” Aubrey head softball coach James Ramsey said. “A lot of people did things to help us be successful, top of the order and bottom of the order. … I was really pleased with the way we performed as a whole.”
Things started a little shaky for Aubrey in the top of the first, with Sanger loading the bases after the Lady Chaps’ starting pitcher Mya Cherry walked one batter and hit two others.
Cherry was able to find her footing and regain control of the inning, striking out the next two batters and keeping Sanger off the scoreboard.
The Lady Chaps used that momentum to get on the scoreboard first, with a 2-run home run from second baseman Molly Reid, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Sanger finally got on the board after a line drive single from first baseman Abby Chapmond brought Niki Boone home, cutting Aubrey’s lead to 1.
It was all Aubrey after that, with catcher Abby Lynch-Buxton leading the scoring salvo with a 2-run homer to center field, giving the Lady Chaps a 4-1 lead.
Aubrey closed things out in the bottom of the fifth inning, adding 6 more runs on big hits from Lynch Buxton, first baseman Judah Van Rijn and outfielder Sophia Place to take the win 11-1.
“Molly got things started with a great shot to left field,” Ramsey said. “We always talk about scoring early, and she helped us do that. Then Abby came in with another two-run home run and gave us four runs. Obviously, those two did a great job, but we had a lot of players performing and doing good things for us.”
Lynch-Buxton led the Lady Chaps with four RBIs on the night, followed by Reid and Place, who both had two.
Ramsey also highlighted Cherry, the Lady Chaps’ starting pitcher, who finished with 12 strikeouts, allowing two hits and 1 run.
“She was a little shaky when the game started because she walked one and hit two, loading the bases, but she was able to settle in and work her way out of that,” he said. “She struggled a little at the start, but she had a great game overall.”
Continuing to improve and staying focused were the key areas Ramsey imparted to his team after the game.
“Every time we step on the field, it’s an opportunity to get better,” he said. “… We just wanted to make sure we were locked in to take advantage of last night’s opportunity, and they definitely were. We’re trying to get better with each passing day leading up to district.”
The Lady Chaps were scheduled to play in a tournament in Portland, Texas, starting on Thursday. The results were not available by press time.
