Teachers deserve gratitude for their impact

OPINION

The impact teachers have on their students is indelible.

I got to see some of that effort and impact in action on May 2.

Pilot Point Middle School teacher Andrea Perez invited several businesses and organizations from throughout the city to be part of the first career fair she has organized.

Her goal in everything she does is to prepare her students for a successful future.

By bringing a wide cross section of options to the school--the state park staff, Pilot Point ISD police and Pilot Point Fire Department, retail in the form of Dennards, farming in the form of Pecan Creek Strawberry Farm, banking with Texas Republic Bank and PointBank, to name just a few-allowed the students to see options within reach, most of which are right here in their community.

I got to speak with some students who are interested in photography or reporting, and I had an insightful question from one table visitor who asked me about my philosophy on providing neutral coverage of the news.

At the end of the event, Andrea talked about wanting to build and improve the event moving forward, which is her approach to everything she does in education.

As this school year hurtles toward its last few days, I can't help but think about this being the close of a big chapter for my youngest.

Next year, she'll be in middle school.

I cannot fully express how grateful I am to the teachers and staff at Monaco Elementary for the care they have shown my girls throughout our years being part of the Monaco family.

It's strange to think that will no longer be the case.

Next year, too, my oldest will be going to Owens Middle School instead of McNabb.

Thank you, too, to the teachers and staff who have been so good to her during her time with you.

Teachers are expected to be so many things-educators, counselors, safety experts, extracurricular coaches.

Thank you for the work you do to help form the students who pass through your classrooms.
