LETTERS TO THE EDITOR OPINION
As residents of Pilot Point and surrounding areas, we must pay close attention to two dangerous bills moving through the Texas Legislature – SB 2522 and SB 844. These proposals threaten to strip small cities like ours of the ability to plan responsibly and protect what matters most.
Simplified, SB 2522, currently in committee, would remove local government authorities to regulate development in their area just outside of the limits. SB 844, which is out of committee and on its way to Calendars, makes it harder for citizens to protest zoning changes, giving developers even greater power while communities are left with little to no say.
I believe deeply in property rights – land ownership is a cornerstone of freedom. HOWEVER, there is a fine balance between the freedom to do what we want and our shared responsibility to be good neighbors and good stewards. These bills are a continued overcorrection that swings the pendulum further toward the power of mega-development. And while not all developers are the same, many are more focused on their bottom line than the long-term well-being of our communities. It’s just how business works.
As Christians, we believe we are appointed by Christ to lead and serve for His glory. Stewardship of God’s resources – our land, water and infrastructure – is part of that calling. We cannot fulfill that role under laws that undermine local authority and erase community voices.
Now is the time to speak up. Contact Senator Brent Hagenbuch and Representative Jared Patterson to tell them Pilot Point (and surrounding areas) stands firmly opposed to SB 2522 and SB 844. We must restore balance and defend our right to guide growth with wisdom, care and accountability.
It’s time to drop the division and come together to protect our town. Let’s do this!
