Aubrey area turns out to raise money for Robinson family
The community showed up for the Robinson family on Saturday during a benefit for Raymon Robinson, who is fighting cancer for the second time in five years.
Robinson beat spine cancer five years ago, only to have a new cancer in his appendix spread throughout his bowels.
“My first round was basically a spinal cord tumor,” Robinson said. “Then we’d pretty much gotten that one stabilized. Then five years later this one popped up. It started in my appendix and kind of exploded and went everywhere. Essentially, it’s stage four colon cancer.”
Family friend Joey Boerner decided one fight with cancer was enough for the Robinson family to take on alone, sparking the idea for the benefit, which featured catfish dinner plates, a silent and live auction, and raffle.
“He’s the one who reached out to everyone and kind of set this up,” Robinson said.
‘Everyone’ was an apt description, as the community filled Paul Redfearn’s Gym on U.S. 377 to bursting.
“It means a lot to see the community come together, support me and fight my battle with me,” Robinson said.
That battle is a costly one, Robinson explained, with the immunotherapy treatments he receives happening in Houston every three weeks.
“It’s been pretty rough,” he said. “Yesterday’s treatment was just a one day turn around, but the ones before that, we’ve had to stay there all week,” Robinsons said. “So it’s $1,100 just for the motel and then whatever we spend in gas, and that’s before what my insurance doesn’t cover on the treatments.”
To donate, the Robinson surrounded by the community who showed up to support him, he offered words of encouragement.
“Don’t let the bad days win,” Robinson said.
