Legacies are built on positive attributes

OPINION

How will we be remembered?

Will our friends and family look kindly on the way we treated them?

Will we leave a lasting imprint on the world around us, either through our personal or professional lives?

Will there be sweet, funny stories shared about us?

Those questions and more came to my mind while I attended the funeral of June Dale West on Monday afternoon.

The mother of my friend Cindy Kennedy, June made an impact on her family, friends and fellow church members.

It was quite endearing to hear the way her sweetheart spoke of becoming her friend and then falling in love with her.

Her niece about the way June taught her sister to be neat and organized by being the opposite.

Her grandchildren about how much growing up with her love and support meant to them.

And Cindy about hearing her mother play one of her favorite songs, 'Over the Rainbow,' in the weeks preceding her death.

I've known many great people who have passed away in recent years. A giant in the journalism world who I looked up to pretty instantly, and another friend in the journalism industry who was kind and hardworking always.

Buster Chandler, who had an incredibly generous heart and was always unequivocally himself.

Linda Fox, who was a kind and consistent volunteer.

Mead McGee, who led his congregation in Tioga with love.

Karen Mattson, who served anyone and everyone she could with love, devotion and determination.

There are many others I could mention, unfortunately.

What stands out in each instance is how I remember them.

I hope to live a life worth celebrating and a legacy worth remembering, like they did.
