She started school at the age of four at Fairview School, which was west of Pilot Point. She graduated from Pilot Point High School at age 16 and immediately went to work at Amos Drugstore on the downtown square. While working there, she began dating Wayne Ray; she and “Sharkey” were married on February 21, 1948, eloping to McKinney. He preceded her in death one week short of their 49th anniversary in 1997. Ruby was an independent newspaper carrier for the Denton Record-Chronicle for 22 years and also worked at Pilot Point High School for 18 years as the librarian, cafeteria cashier, and sold tickets at Bearcat football games. She was an active member of Central Christian Church where she taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and served as church secretary. When her children were in school, Ruby was involved with the Pilot Point PTA, Cub Scouts and the Band Boosters. Later in life, Ruby served on numerous civic boards including the local AARP chapter, Goodfellows, Keep Pilot Point Beautiful, Pilot Point Main Street, and was instrumental in establishing the first public library in Pilot Point. She also volunteered at the Denton County Historical Museum, Sundial Nursing Home, sewed turbans for cancer clinic patients in Denton, and helped for many years with decorations for the annual Pilot Point Educational Foundation Gala. She loved puzzle books, bingo and Saturday night card games with her friends.
